Welcome to our new school!

We were all very excited about coming back after Christmas to see our new school and we were not disappointed! We have not only been enjoying our new classrooms but also our new break out space, filled with wonderful things to help us learn and play. We have been exploring all around the school and were very excited to have gym for the first time in our gym hall as well as lunch in our enormous new lunch hall! We look forward to welcoming our family and friends soon to show them round our new school.

Our very first golden time in our brand new break out space. We had so much fun playing with the other children in primary 1. We have been using the space outside of the classroom for music, painting, crafts and even listening to stories and having circle times. The couches are especially comfy but everyone's favourite thing to sit on are the giant lady bird cushions!

Welcoming a Baby

As part of our welcoming a baby topic, we invited Mrs Coyle and her adorable son Matthew to visit us. We thought of some really interesting questions to ask Mrs Coyle and she showed us some of the things that Matthew needs. We were all really excited to see Matthew and we think he liked coming to visit us because he didn't cry at all!

Welcome to Primary 1b

The children in primary 1b have made a fantastic start at Kirklandneuk primary and have settled in really well. We have really enjoyed getting to know our primary 7 buddies over the past few weeks and we would like to say a big "thank you!" to them for helping us when we are in the playground and showing us what to do in the lunch hall. We look forward to getting to know them better over the year when they come and visit us in our classroom.

So far in primary one, we have been very busy learning to recognise our new sounds and learning how to write them. We have also been getting to know the characters in our reading books: Biff, Chip and Kipper. In maths we have been counting and learning to write and recognise our numbers. We have been having great fun working together on our active maths activities.

Each Friday Miss Williams chooses someone in the class to take home a very special member of our class - Scruff the Dog! We have really enjoyed looking at the photographs and hearing about the different adventures he has been going on with the children.

There are lots of things living in primary 1b!

We are very excited about the latest additions to primary 1b...caterpillars! We have named them all (Bruce, Sooty, Slimey, Crawly, Scott, Junior, Buster, Cutie, William and Kate!) and are measuring them every day to see how big they are getting. One (William) is already 5c m long! We also check them every day to see if they have gone in to their chrysalis yet. Its all very exciting but Miss Williams is keeping her fingers crossed that they don't turn in to butterflies over the May weekend!

Bruce the Caterpillar

We have planted our seeds and are taking really good care of them making sure that they have enough sun light and water.

End of Term Reward

We all had a fantastic afternoon along at the sports centre for our end of term reward. We enjoyed trying new things and having fun with our friends. The fun didn't stop there though because when we got back to school we got to play one of our favourite games...dodgeball!

Term 4

It is hard to believe that we are already in our final term of primary 1. We have all worked so hard over these past three terms and when you look at what we have been able to achieve, all of our hard work has really paid off! So we will keep trying our best so that we can achieve our final targets that we have set for ourselves this term.

The new term brings with it a brand new topic all about living things. We decided that we wanted to learn about different insects and how flowers grow. We also thought of some questions we would like to find answers to:

How can an ant carry something that is heavier that it?

How do butterflies drink water?

Can you get ladybirds that aren't red?

We hope to find answers to all of these questions as we learn about our topic.

To learn more about how plants grow and how to look after them, we have planted some seeds in our classroom. Check back soon to see how we are getting on (Fingers crossed we see something growing soon!)

Primary 1b's Jungle

We have had a fantastic time this term creating our very own jungle in our classroom. We have been hard at work preparing to show our friends and family what we have been doing and they were very impressed with what we have been able to achieve.

We would like to say a big thank you to our primary 7 buddies who took the time out of working on their own classroom to show us how to be really good guides for our families on our open evening.

Term 3 in Primary 1b

It has been another busy start to the term in primary 1b. We have been hard at work on our 'Top Secret' topic and cannot wait until our family and friends come in to our classroom and have a look to see what we have been busy doing.

Trips to the library

We have been very lucky to be able to go and visit our local library once a week for the next three weeks. We get to look round all the different books they have to offer as well as listen to new and exciting books to do with out topic.

Toys Topic

We have all really enjoyed our toys topic and being able to learn about old and new toys. We enjoyed it so much that we thought that we could have a go at making our own toys!

We had to work together to design and then make our toys. We made jigsaws, board games, dolls and even teddy bears!

When we had made our jigsaw we challenged our friends to see if they could put it back together again!

We made our board games and then told our friends how to play it and what all the different rules were.

We all had an important job to play to make our toy.

Our Jungle Friend

We recently received a very interesting letter from our new jungle friend, asking us for help to make a new jungle home for him! We were all very surprised and excited.

We will let you know how our rainforest home is coming along by taking some photographs soon.

Winter Wonderland!

Our playground has been covered in snow for two weeks now! Although it looks very pretty, it is really icy and we have not been able to go out to play.

Working hard on our sounds

As well as getting ready for performing at our nativity, we have been playing some new games in the classroom to help us get better at knowing our sounds and blending words together. Working together means that we can help each other out when we are unsure and it is lots of fun too!

Our New Topic

Our new topic is all about toys. So far we have been busy finding out what we already know about toys (and finding out what toys our parents used to play with!) We thought carefully about what we wanted to learn about toys. Some of the things we want to investigate are:

How are toys made?
Do children in other countries play with the same toys we play with?
What kinds different kinds of toys are there?

And many more!

We decided that we should name our teams after toys, so in our groups we suggested different toys we could name ourselves after and then took a vote. Our new groups names are: Buzz Lightyear, Toy Soldiers, Jessie and Ben 10.

We worked co-operatively to make posters for our groups which would go up on the wall. We each had a special job to do and had our own space on the poster to fill with our very best drawings. We all did a fantastic job and our posters look fantastic! We all look forward to doing tasks in our team earning lots of team points.

Nativity

We have been been busy rehearsing for our Christmas nativity. We all have a special part to play and some of us have some things to say! We are enjoying singing with the primary two children and the teachers think that we are starting to sound fantastic! We hope that everyone will come and watch our very special production.

It's hard to believe that we have only been in our new classroom for just over a week. We have all settled in really well and are enjoying our new playground and lunch hall. We would all agree that our new library and water and sand are brilliant fun!

We are all still working really hard at learning our sounds and numbers and are getting better every

day at reading words! We are really excited about getting our new reading books and having a go at sounding out the words in them.

Our next topic is all about toys, we brainstormed all of the different things we already knew about toys as well as the things we would like to know. We are looking forward to finding out lots of new things and telling our family and friends what we are doing in class.

End Of Term Reward

We were all very excited about the party at the end of term especially because we got to see all of our friends from the other primary 1 classes. We played lots of games like pass the parcel and musical statues. What we all really enjoyed doing though was dancing! It was hard to pick the best dancers because everyone was so good!

We really enjoyed playing pass the parcel and we got so excited everytime we had to unwrap a layer!

There were still lots more layers to go after this one!

After the party we went back to our classrooms to have our snack and chat to our friends. It was nice to sit next to children from Mrs Ayres class and show them round our classroom.

Designing and Decorating

We designed our own t-shirts for Lola using paints, sponges, brushes and collage materials. We decided to give them a good sprinkiling of glitter to make them look fantastic.

On Wednesday we had a special spooky visitor to our classroom, we were all very surprised to find him in the library enjoying one of our books when we came in in the morning!

Jack the pumpkin

Miss Williams asked us to think about what we thought of when we saw Jack and then shared our ideas with our shoulder partner.We worked really well with our shoulder partners and listened very carefully to other children's ideas. We put our ideas into a 3D mind map, we were really impressed with our hard work and imaginative ideas, so was Miss Williams!

Welcome to Primary 1b!

Settling In

We have made a fantastic start to our first year at Kirklandneuk primary. We have made lots of new friends and we are learning new things every day. So far we have been learning new sounds, how to write numbers and letters and we have even been investigating 2D and 3D shapes.

We have also been working hard at being good listeners and contributors during our activities. Our photographs show us working together quietly and co-operatively.

We are very good at lining up quietly and being sensible.

Buddies

We have been getting to know our very helpful primary 7 buddies, they came to visit us during maths and helped us with our active learning. The primary 7's have also been showing us how to line up for lunch and where we should sit. We have also been having great fun playing with our new friends in the playground. We would like to thank them very much for helping us to settle in to our new school.

We think that the primary 7s enjoyed helping us write our numbers in the sand and in Playdoh as much as we did!

We were very lucky to have a special (and giant) visitor in our school. The Gladigator came to visit us to tell us all about how to keep our teeth clean and why it is so important. He also brought with him an inflatable obstacle course which we all really enjoyed.

Pupil of the week

We have all been working really hard in primary 1b to keep our name on the star and we always try to be helpful and kind to others. Miss Williams is very proud of us all.

So far five members of our class have been awarded with our special 'pupil of the week' trophy. Well done!

House Points

We were all very excited to find out that we are members of one of the four school houses:Spartan, Waverley, Britannia and Glenlee.

We look forward to earning lots of points for our houses!

Newest member of p1b

On our first day of school we got a special delivery, a little scuffy dog who was also here for his first day of school. We took a vote and decided to call him Scruff the dog. He is now awarded to our group of the week and gets to sit at our desk and watch us all working hard. He also enjoys sitting with us during circle time and listens to all of our news. He is enjoying primary 1 as much as we are.

We were very fortunate with the weather on our trip as you can see from the pictures.
When we arrived at Strathclyde country park we had some time to play with the children from room 1. We had a lovely time.

Our class had a really fun day out when we visited the 'rainforest' in Amazonia as part of our class topic. We were shown around by Becky, who told us all about the different creatures. We got to see lots of interesting things like these beautiful butterflies.

We looked at the soldier ants. They are very strong and can carry things leaves that weigh twenty times more than them!

We especially liked the handling session where we were able to handle a snake, a large snail, a millipede and finally a turtle. We had to vote which animal we would most like to handle, a turtle or a tarantula. Mrs Ayres was very relieved when we voted for the turtle!!!

It was quite an experience handling some of the animals and not everyone wanted to touch them all but we were very brave.

minibeast hunt

Diane from Starling Learning came into class today to help us learn about minibeasts that we might find in our playground.

She told us about insects having six legs and asked us to think about other creatures that had more legs or even none at all!

We were keen to get outside and have a look for ourselves, even though it was quite chilly!

Diane showed us where to look and how to carefully lift the minibeasts with a spoon so that we didn't hurt them.

We worked with a partner to find the minibeasts.

We looked at them closely in the viewing jars. The jar had a special lid that made the minibeasts look much bigger so that we could have a really good look at them.

We had to put them back in the same area that we found them. Diane told us that some minibeasts might not travel too far so if we put them at the other side of the playground, they might never get home.

Katie Morag Open Evening

Room 2 held their open evening this week and it was very well attended by our family and friends.We entertained our guests with Scottish songs and dancing in the gym hall, then we took them on a tour of our class. Just in case you missed it, here are a few pictures.

Grannie's wall was made up of bricks that described the ways we have shown ourselves to be confident individuals, successful learners, effective contributors and responsible citizens. We discussed our learning each week before writing on our bricks. Our wall is very high!

Our beach wall displays some of our writing and pictures of the birds we researched. You can also see the pictures that we took of our shell fish. We made pictures with Mrs Dargo using real shells.
In the sea we have our lovely colourful fish. We made these as a group challenge and we think they look good. We also worked together to make our bird information posters. Our sense poems are displayed around the edges.

Outside our Post Office you can see the photographs that we took when we went on our materials hunt with Room 1. We had to write about the pictures before Mrs Ayres could put them up on the wall.

We finished the evening by drawing the raffle for Katie Morag's teddy bear in the hall. It was a very enjoyable night and Mrs Ayres was so proud of the children.

To make sure that all of our activities would work out, we had some new buddies from primary 6 come and try them.

We had lots of fun showing them all of our super work and our Post Office of course.

They worked through our activity sheets that we were going to use with our families in the evening. They even got to try out our jigsaw puzzles....

...and play the games that we had made.

We really enjoyed showing them round our classroom.

Primary 6 seemed to enjoy the visit too.

Visit to the Post Office

As part of the preparations for our open evening, we designed some tartan kilts to be used as the cover for our invitations.

Mrs Ayres thought that we made a really good job of them. What do you think?

Once we had made the cover, we had to write the invitation. We talked about why it was important to try and keep our handwriting nice and neat - we wouldn't want our Mummies and Daddies to get mixed up about when to come!

The next job was to put them in the envelopes and write the addresses - that kept Mrs Ayres busy for a wee while - then it was off to the post office to buy some stamps.

We had to walk along beside our partners. We really enjoyed getting out and about.

When we got to the post office, the lady gave us each a stamp to put on our special letters. Mrs Ayres was pleased that we remembered our manners.

After the stamps were safely in place we posted the letters into the post box.

When we looked at the writing on the post box we found that the postman would collect our letters at 5pm.

We had a lovely time. Thank you again to Mrs Cameron for coming along to help us.

Terrific Technology

We got to try out our technology skills this week when Kieran helped us with some woodwork and Mrs Ayres and Mrs Ward helped us to build models with plasticene.

We had to listen to the instructions and be very careful, especially when we were using the saws.

We are not going to say what we were making but you might be able to look for them at our open evening.

As a little clue we can tell you that all of the models will be displayed on or around the island.

Katie Morag group tasks

One of the things that we are really enjoying about our Katie Morag topic is the opportunity to work with lots our friends. We are helping each other and having fun as we complete our group tasks.

Spinning wool like Grannie Island

Primary 1 were very pleased when they came into class the other day and found a special visitor with lots of things to tell them all about life on a farm.

Alice from Lamont Farm brought some really exciting things to show us. She showed us some of the foods that the different animals eat and even her wellies!

She talked to us about how Grannie Island would get her wool to knit cosy jumpers for Katie Morag and shawls for baby Liam. She wouldn't buy it from a shop but would collect it from her sheep.

Alice very kindly showed us some of the equipment that might be used like a spindle, a niddy noddy and a lazy kate.

Grannie would clean the wool using carders before she could spin it on her spinning wheel.

Alice was very good at spinning the wool. She showed us what it looked like when it had just come off of a sheep and it was very different to when it was spun.

We also enjoyed looking at the pictures of the animals on Lamont Farm and were quite surprised at how many different ones there were.

Butter Making

As part of our Katie Morag topic we are looking at Grannie Island's farm. One of the things that Grannie Island might do is to churn butter. Primary 1 were very lucky today. They had a very special visitor called Mrs McNair. Mrs McNair explained that butter was made from cream and then helped us to make our very own butter.
We had to 'churn' the butter by shaking it lots and lots of times. Everyone had a turn at this. Even Mrs Ayres and Miss McCabe!

When it was thicker, Mrs McNair put the butter into a bowl. She had to take out the buttermilk then she showed us how to pat the butter to take out the extra liquid.

Some people thought that it looked a bit like ice-cream when it was ready.

We spread the freshly made butter on some crackers.

Then we enjoyed eating it. It was really tasty!

Outdoor learning

We took our learning outdoors recently. Our class went out into the playground with room 1 at maths time. We played lots of games to help our counting, and we even took part in a problem solving challenge.

Before we came back in, we practised our addition sums with a learning partner - by writing them on the playground! Primary 1 had lots of fun!

Active Month

As part of our active month we have had the opportunity to take part in a variety of healthy activities.

Curling was a great success.

Mr Armour and Ryan came into school to help us with this and we had lots of fun!

We really enjoyed the aerobics session in the playground before we even came into school - some parents and grandparents joined in too!

We were all wide awake and ready to start our lessons when we came into class.

We would like to say a big thank you to Mrs Gray for all her hard work organising these fun activities.

We got to try out tai kwon do which most of us had not heard of but found that we liked it.

Katie Morag

Primary 1b are working on a very exciting topic this term. We are learning all about Katie Morag and the Isle of Struay. As you can see from the pictures, we are having lots of fun already!

Can you guess what we are making?

Our family and friends will be invited into our class at the end of term to see what we have been doing. We don't want to say too much just now as that would spoil the surprise.

We made a learning plan with room 1 to find out what we already know and what we would like to learn about. There are so many things that we are keen to find out that we are going to be kept very busy indeed this term.

Maths in primary 1b

The boys and girls are very good at counting their numbers and we are now working on addition sums.
Mrs Ayres is really pleased with the children as they are working so hard.
Active maths is still lots of fun in the classroom and it is a good time for everyone to improve their skills and to help each other.

Our class toy shop was a great way to practice counting out our pennies while having lots of fun!

Good Behaviour in Room 2

Nativity

Our infant Nativity was a great success, enjoyed by both pupils and audiences. The children worked so hard to learn all of the songs, words and dances and they performed wonderfully. Mrs Ayres and the other teachers were so proud of them.

Christmas disco

The Christmas disco was a great success and lots of fun was had by all. The boys and girls looked so smart in their lovely outfits.

Some of us worked so hard at our dancing that we were a little tired out by the end of the disco - but we really enjoyed it!

We all enjoyed spending time with our friends.

Gladigator

Gladigator came to visit our school last week. We listened to advice about keeping our teeth healthy and then we got to play on his inflatable toy. It was such fun!

Homecoming week

To celebrate homecoming we had lots of Scottish activities in school. We got to try some traditional Scottish food in the dinner hall. Miss Kingsley made us soup, haggis, stovies and shortbread. We also wore tartan to school, listened to Scottish stories, made a picture of Nessie, sang Scottish songs and tried out some Scottish dancing at PE. It was lots of fun.

Toys

Our topic this term is toys. We have been looking at how toys have changed over the years and the materials that are used to make them.
We completed a placemat challenge in our groups to find out about our favourite toys.

Mrs Ayres showed us some old fashioned toys and some toys with moving parts. We got to try these out in our groups. Most children really liked the cup and ball but it was really tricky to catch the ball in the cup.
As well as learning about toys, we have also been making toys, such as masks, peg dolls and juggling balls. We even made a really great noughts and crosses game from card and plasticene that we can play at golden time.

At active maths time we enjoy counting our pennies to buy toys in our class toy shop.

Litter Pick

Primary 1 had a great time helping to keep the school grounds looking good recently.

Our primary 7 buddies brought vests and gloves for us to wear that helped to keep us safe.

We searched all around the playground for litter and any that we found, we put in the bin.

Outdoor Learning

We had lots of fun when we went into the school grounds recently, despite the rain!

We were looking at the changes in the trees during Autumn. We thought that the changing colours were very pretty.

We collected lots of Autumn leaves to help us with our artwork.

The berries on this tree are very colourful and will make a nice meal for a bird during the colder months, but we have to remember not to touch them as they could make us very ill.

Toys

Our new topic this term is Toys. To help us with our new topic, primary 1b created a Learning Plan for the topic. This will help us learn about things we want to know about, as well as showing Mrs Ayres what we know already.
The first task we had was to decide on our favourite toy. We had to show this as a group drawing. Our groups created a poster called a 'placemat'. We had to work as a team, listen to each other and remember our group roles. Mrs Ayres was very pleased with the way that we listened to each other.

Happy Halloween

Our Halloween disco was a great success and lots of fun was had by all. Mrs Ayres hardly recognised us. She was very impressed with our fabulous costumes. Take a look at the pictures to see why.

End of term reward

As a reward for staying on the star and not having 3 reds we had a disco. This was great fun and we were allowed to wear our own clothes all day if we wanted to. You can see from the pictures that we really enjoyed ourselves.

We got to make lots of noise when we sang along with the music.

We were really good at dancing.

We had lots of fun with our friends.

Good Behaviour

Mrs Ayres was very proud at the end of our first term when Mrs Weiland gave out the termly certificates for excellent behaviour to so many children.

You can only get a certificate if you have been on the traffic lights less than 5 times and have not been on the red.

Welcoming a baby

As part of our Religious and Moral Education topic, Welcoming a baby, we had a visit to our class from Brian Hawthorn from Scripture Union. He helped us to think about all of the things that babies need.

We also went to visit Trinity Church where Mr Steele talked to us about how babies are welcomed into the church and was kind enough to tell us all about the pulpit, the communion table, the baptismal font and the lectern. He even let us explore the church. You can see from the pictures how much fun we had.

We listened to Mr Steele and answered his questions.

We liked looking at the church from up in the gallery.

It was fun taking turns to stand in the pulpit.

We got to look closely at the baptismal font and the communion table.

It was a lovely day to walk to the church.

The boys and girls in room 2 had lots of fun during their first ever golden time in Kirklandneuk. We have golden time every Friday afternoon as a reward for staying on the star. As you can see, we really enjoyed playing with the dressing up box!

Primary 1b have settled happily into school life. It has been a very busy first few weeks with so many new things to see and do. We have been having lots of fun learning about our Jolly Phonic sounds, counting and writing our numbers and making lots of new friends too!

We are able to work quietly and sensibly together.

We decided what we would have to do to be a quality audience when someone is speaking to us. We can listen really well.

When we line up we can be a quality line. We think that this is really important when we are walking through the school.

We have been supported in settling into the routines of school life by our primary 7 buddies. We have really enjoyed getting to know our buddies. We like it when they visit the class for a chat and to read a story to us but they are also very good at playing games with us in the playground.

Our buddies were a great help on our first visit to the dinner hall. They showed us where to sit and helped us to collect everything that we needed. It was really nice to be able to eat our lunches together.
